The Order of the White Scarf of Caid was awarded for outstanding ability in SCA-style rapier combat in accordance with the Treaty of the White Scarf.

The White Scarf was initially an award in the principality of Ansteorra, to recognize excellence on the rapier field. When Ansteorra became a kingdom in AS XIV, the award was released by the parent kingdom of Atenveldt to Ansteorra. In AS XXI (1987) the Kingdom of the Outlands asked if they could use the name "White Scarf" for their rapier award as well. After some discussion between the Crown and the White Scarves, it was agreed that they could, and the Heralds of the respective kingdoms drew up the original Treaty.[1]

In 1996, Caid "signed on to the White Scarf treaty", requesting permission to register the name within these borders. The Order was opened by Edric and Albra, when they elevated Don Kelan McBride of Arainn to the order at Coronation in Lyondemere, 11/2/1996.

Originally, the Order of the White Scarf of Caid was awarded at the Crown's discretion, though by tradition, an elevation was never performed without first consulting the other companions of the Order. The Order formally became a poling order ca. 2005.

At King's Hunt 2015, King Mansur announced the closure of the Order in Caid following the elevation of Don Diego Antonio de Palma. The Order was formally closed to new members in the 17th edition of the Boke of Caidan Law, 17th Edition, published in May of 2015. While the Order of the White Scarf of Caid may no longer be adding new members to their number, the Companions of that venerable Order continue to display the noble characteristics which led to their elevation to the Order, and in doing so bring great honour to our realm. In their fierce defense of our land upon the field of Rapier Battle, and their honourable demeanor in every aspect of their behavior they continue to prove themselves treasures of Caid.

White Scarf Charter

The Charter of the White Scarf of Caid, ( 2007 ) offers the following characteristics as prerequistes for admission to the Order of the White Scarf of Caid:

• "Outstanding excellence in rapier combat;
• Courteous and chivalrous behavior, on and off the tournament field;
• Service to the Kingdom of Caid and its people;
• Obedience to the laws and ideals of Caid and the Society for Creative Anachronism;
• Willingness to instruct others in these accomplishments."

The Charter also grants the members of the Order of the White Scarf of Caid the following rights and privileges:

• "Membership in the Order shall carry with it a Grant of Arms. The Order of the White Scarf shall rank equally in precedence with the other Grant-level Orders in Caid, including the *Order of the Crescent, the Order of the Lux Caidis, the Order of the Gauntlet of Caid, and the Order of Chiron.
• Companions of the White Scarf are solely entitled to wear a white scarf, fastened at the left shoulder or tied above the left elbow.
• Companions of the White Scarf may style themselves “Don” or “Doña.” While this title is not unique to them, it is the traditional honorific for Companions of the Order.
• Companions of the White Scarf of Caid may add the initials “WSC” to their signatures.
• Companions of the Order of the White Scarf of Caid may display their achievement with black or steel gray helm, with mantling and crest above their arms and also "a white banderolle tied around the helm, replacing the torse"

Titles

• Bestows the style of "honorable lord/lady", and may be addressed as "Your Lordship / Ladyship".
• Don/Dona is the title most frequently used by the Companions of this Order.
• Alternate Titles are available for substitution.

Token/Regalia

• White scarf worn on the left arm or shoulder.
• White Scarves may display their achievement with black or steel gray helm, with mantling and crest above their arms and also "a white banderolle tied around the helm, replacing the torse" (from Scribe's Handbook)
