==Combat==
==Combat==
Preliminary activities to include Armored Combat, Rapier, and Unarmored Combat.
Combat:
Armored Combat, Rapier and Youth Combat (standard age groups) will each be able to fight in 2 Tourneys.

==Contests==
Defending Their Honor Single Sword double elimination Tourney: Each fighter needs $5 donation to enter the tourney and they are to fight for the honor or memory of someone affected by breast cancer. This disease has touched so many of us, finding the name of someone should not be difficult.
*Best use of pink in armor or gear- Each of the 3 fighting communities judged separately (so 3 winners)

Ransom Tourney Fought Bear Pit-style: Each fighter needs $1 donation for each fight. For example if you win 5 fights in a row, and then lose, you will be asked to donate $5 to re-enter the field. So you ultimately pay for all the fights you have won to stay in the tourney. The victor will be determined based on points, 2 for each win, 1 for each loss. It will be a test of how long will your stamina and donations hold out!
Fighters! Think about asking your friends, family, warband and co-workers to sponsor you to enter and buy more lives in the tourneys. Come to the event with a pocketful of THEIR money so you can fight all day. Better yet, invite them to attend and support you, while we all support this worthy cause!

(<i>The following information was included on the event website to explain SCA combat to non-SCA attendees.</i>)

About SCA Combat

Armored combat in the SCA resembles medieval foot tournaments. Combatants can face each other in single combat in tournaments, or can take part in large melee battles that can have dozens or even hundreds of combatants on each side.

Since we prefer that no one gets hurt, SCA combatants wear real armor and use rattan swords. Rattan, which looks like bamboo but has a solid core, is springy enough to absorb some of the force of the blow without snapping, and light enough to approximate the weight of a steel sword. Swords are constructed by wrapping a yard-long piece of rattan in duct tape and attaching a hilt. Building armor is much more complex – a complete suit has many parts, which can be made from hammered steel, rivets, leather, even rigid plastic (if well-disguised). Some pieces of armor can take many, many hours to construct.

Novice fighters are trained by the more experienced fighters. They are taught how to use their weapons, how to defend themselves, and how to judge blows received in combat. Every fighter on the field is on his/her honor to accept a blow sufficient to "wound" or "kill". At the end of training, if the marshals (our safety officers) decide that the fighter is safe – not necessarily good, but unlikely to hurt him or herself or an opponent – then the fighter is considered authorized to fight. The process of becoming authorized can take from a few weeks to several months.

Another type of SCA combat is fencing, also known as rapier combat. Participants use real blades and for protection they wear regulation fencing masks, padded torso protection, and shirts and pants made from heavy fabric to protect their limbs. Unlike modern fencing, SCA fencing is done "in-the-round", and combatants can fight in close with their opponents. Blows are acknowledged by the recipient (as in armored combat), not by a set of judges. Fencers can face each other one-on-one in tournaments, or in large melee battles with dozens or even hundreds on a side.

SCA fencing has its own set of marshals who supervise the authorization process. New fencers must demonstrate their knowledge of the rules and ability to participate safely before they can compete in tournaments.

In all SCA combat, safety is the most important consideration. There are armor requirements and rules which all participants must follow. Before combat begins, the marshals inspect the combatants' equipment to make sure they are safe. During the battles, the marshals watch for unsafe situations and keep spectators safe.

"My cousin Suzy was 3 months older that me. Although the family moved to Hawaii when she was 6, whenever we got together it was like we had never been apart. Suzy was so much fun! I don't think there was ever anyone who didn't like her or wasn't entertained by her. She would sit me down and have "make-up and hair party" when either of us would visit. I think she sensed my need in those areas...

By the time Suzy's doctors diagnosed the severe pain in her shoulder, her breast cancer had metastasized to her bones. She fought the brave fight of chemo and stem cell replacement followed by more chemo for over 4 years. We lost this bright and shining personality in September 1999. Suzy was just 44 years old.

I miss her every day. She will always be in my heart." - Monique Marie Sauniere

"Cancer is part of our family. I have three first cousins who have had/have breast cancer. My cousin Sandra lost her fight with breast cancer in 1997. Two of my other cousins are currently battling it now. Luana has just underwent her second mastectomy and almost lost her life in the process, her younger sister Salome was just diagnosed with breast and skin cancer about two months ago. We have other cancer survivors in our family as well. My son, Garrett, is a survivor of Myelodysplastic Syndrome, which is a form of bone marrow cancer that if not treated can turn into a form of Leukemia. My sister has just been told she is in remission from cervical cancer and is a survivor of a blood cancer. Both my paternal grandmother and mom battled colon cancer and my mom survived uterine cancer. My mother in law lost her battle with lung cancer last year." - Lady Rayne Archer of Annan

"I’m the lucky one. Bonnie Spring my mother first told me at lunch at McDonalds of her diagnoses. Breast Cancer. Because of her large cup size they had missed it in the past and it had progressed. She needed surgery, chemo and radiation. At age 52 in 1992 we feared the worst. We’re the lucky ones. 17 years later and 3 more diagnosis and she is still with us. She is strong. She is smart. She gets checked regularly and she has a sense of humor about it and all things. She is the lucky one. Her younger sister Betty Pitts was not. She succumbed in 2001 to Renal Cancer. My mother misses her. I am grateful for every day I still have with my mom although, I still can’t look a Big Mac in the face." - Condesa Battista de Lagos

"Janie-mom was the most wonderful mom ever, encouraging and enabling. She was the best roommate and was always proud of me and all my adventures. But breast cancer invaded and took her life in 2002. I still miss her terribly. No one should have to be in that much pain. Let’s beat this wretched disease!" - [[Bridget Lucia MacKenzie]]

On Sunday, October 25, 2009, the Caidan Ladies of the Roses, in conjunction with the Barony of the Angels and volunteers from across Caid, hosted a tournament dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation's breast cancer research.

Event Staff

1 Tragically, Duchess Kolfinna kottr passed away on October 1, 2009.

About the Event

About 192,370 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2009. The goal of treating breast cancer is to get rid of the cancer as completely as possible and prevent it from returning. Awareness of symptoms, obtaining annual mammograms and supporting ongoing research are critical to defeating this horrible disease that seems to have touched so many people.

Now you have a chance to join that fight by contributing to The Pink Ribbon Tournament: A Medieval Event for a Modern Cure, sponsored by local members of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The SCA is an international non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to researching and re-creating the medieval world.

On October 25, medieval and modern worlds will meet as we fight for the greatest prize of all - a cure for breast cancer. The SCA's Kingdom of Caid and the Barony of the Angels plan a day of medieval fighting, arts displays, games, and revelry to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. The Pink Ribbon Tournament will be held on October 25, 2009 at Recreation Park, 620 South Shamrock Avenue in Monrovia, CA, 91016.

We are seeking donations including money, products, goods, services, and gift certificates. Donated items may be written off as charitable donations, and we will list you and your business on our web site or gate book as a thank-you for your generosity.

Combat

Combat: Armored Combat, Rapier and Youth Combat (standard age groups) will each be able to fight in 2 Tourneys.

Defending Their Honor Single Sword double elimination Tourney: Each fighter needs $5 donation to enter the tourney and they are to fight for the honor or memory of someone affected by breast cancer. This disease has touched so many of us, finding the name of someone should not be difficult.

(The following information was included on the event website to explain SCA combat to non-SCA attendees.)

In Memoriam

At the event we will have a Memory Pavilion where you can display pictures, mementos and stories of those who have lost, or are still fighting, the battle with breast cancer. A book will be available to write in your stories, thoughts and wishes. The Memory Pavilion will also have breast cancer awareness brochures and information on mammograms, prevention, health and other supporting research. Please visit!

Here on the website, we are collecting names, stories, and memories of our friends who survived and of those who lost their battles with breast cancer. These memories will be printed and placed on display in the Memory pavilion. Send your stories to the Event Stewards.

Let’s beat this wretched disease!" - Bridget Lucia MacKenzie

Duchess Chamayn of Castile and I would like to thank everyone who attended, who brought raffle items, who bought tickets, who made items or worked in advance of the event, who fought, who worked AT the event! Thanks be to the following fine people. Any listing of folks is always fraught with omissions and errors, so I apologize in advance for missing anyone!

Again, I am sure I have forgotten some critical names, please remind me! Please know you have our heartfelt thanks for everyone’s help and support. This was a cause very close to my heart and I thank you from the bottom of it for making this dream come true. ~Mistress Bridget Lucia MacKenzie
