The heraldic title refers to the "totem animal" of the Kingdom, the heraldic dolphin. Master Hrorek's article on the history of Caid's heraldic titles tells us the title was created in May 1978. Therefore the heraldic title was derived from the Order of the [[Dolphin]], created in 1975.

Since November 2010, Dolphin is the primary Submission Herald and therefore is also an officer of the College of Arms of the Society. (previously, Crescent Principal Herald made decisions on submissions at the kingdom level--between 2003 and 2010, Dolphin served as External Submissions Herald only)
