Unto the populace from the Autocrat of the Fall Equestrian Event. For the past several years Caidanns have been asked to "participate" (read "work hard") at nundanely organized Medieval/Ren Fairs across Southern California. In return we get little or no recompense (but sometimes a lot of aggravation for ourselves or for our Guild and Baronial coffers.
On Sept. 23. 1990, the Academy of Equestrian Arts (AEA) held the first Medieval Fair of its kind. Run entirely by Caidans ALL PROCEEDS went to Caidans! Approximately 500-600 mundanes attended and perused the 20 merchant booths, and watched 30+ riders compete in medieval equestrian games. The Day concluded with a heavy weapons demo and raffle. The following people (and their unnamed helpers) were were especially crucial in making this event work. In essence they were my "right hand."
- Constables: Lord Alexander Drake (pre-event planning, Head Security) & Muirdock & Gracchus.
- Admissions: Their Excellencies Leo, Rowena, Trista & Lord Shannon & Lady Alina.
- Heralds: Thorin and Lady Alithea.
- Site Set-up: Kirsten of Ravenhold & Eric du Marne
- Pre-Event Publicity: Wyatt the Odd
- Chirurgeons: Master Sebastian & Margaret of Dragonmarsh
- Chatelaines: (Note - Baronial only) Ladies Mora & Misty, Kurt and Krystal
- Games Event Autocrat: Lord Agelos Evience (we only had 1 argument over the headsets!)
- "The Maze Event": (This was a tough course but fun & well done) Their Excellencies Kristin, Robear & Amadea
- Raffle: (All Newcomers) Sandra, Leanne, Christin, Mariena
- Awards, Medallions & Prizes: Baroness Emerald, Duke Armand, Lady Diana O'Lawler
- Rental Horse Coordinator: Duke Armand (this had to be one of the worst tasks!)
- Lists:Pitch hitters Sandra & Lady Katheryn of Wyndsford, Baroness Melissandra, Lady Adrianna
- Crescents Lady One (such enthusiasm & great games!)
- Equipment: Yoshira
- Exchequer: Baron Hrorek
- Heavy Weapons Demo: Lord Thomas Danlar
- Lastly, but never least, every one of the ground crew were invaluable: Lord Hedge, Lady Rhiannon, Allain, Lorde Matthew de Wolfe, Marcellus, David, Kasimir, Evaine. Malena, Baron Aldred (also Court Herald & Fighter}.
A very special thank you to Queen Lyn & Their Highnesses Ivan and Fiona for Their Royal Presence & participation in this major undertaking. First, it was great to have Royalty promoting the Equestrian Arts. Secondly we needed their Presents to help support this fund-raising activity.
Speaking of which, a hearty huzzah to all of the merchants who attended & donated wonderful gifts for the Raffle and Auction (date TBA) They came from all across Caid to this "First-Time Faire" because they believed that the SCA could put on a successful fair of its on, and we did!
Yes, the SCA us a non-profit organization. Unfortunately, it needs money to run itself. Some of our expenses for this fair included: arena rental, insurance, games equipment, postage and printing. That's the real world and it revolves around money. Every year it costs more and more to run events. The arena rental went up by $50 from last year! How long could you each afford to pay site fees for every event you attend? Well, now we (like this Faire) can b entertaining enough to mundanes such that they'll enjoy themselves & foot the bill for us. We can entertain & educate them at fundraisers like this and still keep ourselves solvent and the Dream alive.
In Service to the Dream, Donwenna Beasthealer of Hawkeye

From Baron Malcolm Alberic:
I remember that this was the second event at Ingalls Park in Norco. We of The Dreiburgen Light Horse decided to once again forgo our tradition of riding to local equestrian events. Having made the ten mile ride from House Montrose in Pedley to Norco a number of times, we knew a twenty mile round trip by horse through the Santa Anna River bottom tends to take up much of the day. We also used SCA equestrian events as opportunities to train green horses. Thus we decided to trailer over two green broke horses that needed some show experience. Green broke horses is also why we decide to ride at the intermediate level
