Memories
Tryggvi Halftrollson who I knew from another hobby we participated in, invited me to an event in Califia where we both lived. As a student of history I was intrigued, and we became more regular attendees, at least in Califia.
Trygvii's artistic talents expressed themselves when he created his armour out of ABS plastic, which for a while we shared at the same event. When we had to fight each other, one of us did not answer the call and the other won the fight. This continued until I could get my own armour and we could both fight in a tournament without exchanging armour.
From James the Inconstant
- His Grace Duke Jason tells me I was the first person in the SCA to greet him. I can only plead insanity. Actually, I must admit a small bit of pride if my welcome influenced his decision to stick around. Among his many other accomplishments in the SCA he was objectively one of the two best fighters in the Kingdom of Caid for a full five years. Jason was the bridesmaid at Crown seven times in a row. That's right. Seven. Then he won the eighth Crown, reigned at the ninth, and won the tenth. Ten Crowns is five years. It should also be noted he won a third time four Crowns later. So, maybe more than five years. He's also a great guy.

Kingdom of Caid Facebook Page 06/09/2025: DID YOU KNOW...
There is one King whose tale is an especially notable one, a tale of perseverance, and determination, unequalled in the rolls of our realm's history. Duke Jason Griffiths of Shadowhyrst, the Ninth King of Caid, holds the dubious distinction of being the "Other Finalist" -SEVEN- times in a row prior to winning the Crown for his Consort, HRM Natalya Gregorovna of Shadowhyrst ( now known as Natalya de Foix) .
As the legend has it, upon the advice of Sir Robear du Bois, His Would-Be Royal Majesty switched his heraldic colors from his normal black and gold to blue and white for that eighth tourney - which, it would seem, was a wise choice, as at last, he finally claimed the Crown that for so long had evaded him. Duke Jason and Duchess Natalya were crowned in Calafia in May of 1982, reigning until November of that same year. TRM Jason and Natalya would return to the thrones for a second reign, as Eleventh King and Queen of Caid, in 1983. In 1985, HRM Jason would reign once more, as the fifteenth Sovereign of Caid with his Consort, Isabel Antonia de Aranjuez.
The tenacity, and resolve of Duke Jason stands as a reminder to all: Never give up... ... and sometimes, a good fashion consultant can make all the difference. ( 🙂 )
From Eadwynne of Runedun
I remember at the time, a lot of people, many of them non-fighters, tried to analyze why Jason had "come in second" so many times. There were lots of theories. But my favorite came from Sir Charles of Dublin who said, "It's simple. Someone hit him in the head and he took it." I honestly believe that Sir Charles said that as a compliment to Jason's sense of honor, chivalry and fair play (as well as being technically accurate).
