In 2023 (AS 58), the kingdom of Caid lost our much beloved Mistress Aliskye Rosel. Aliskye was an enthusiastic supporter of the scribal arts in Caid, having twice served as Scribe Armarius and then as keeper of the . A prolific scribe in her own right, Aliskye was recognized for her talent with admittance to the Order of the Laurel in 2013 (AS 48).

Through the Aliskye Rosel Memorial Endowment Award, a journeyman scribe shall be chosen by the College of Scribes, no more than once per reign; and this gentle shall receive a monetary award to support their continuing journey in the scribal arts.

Background

Per Aliskye's Living Trust, Article VI titled Gift of Cash:

“Within a reasonable time after my death the Trustee shall distribute the sum of Ten Thousand ($10,000) Dollars to The Society of Creative Anachronism, to be allocated to the College of Scribes of the Kingdom of Caid.”

A committee was formed (Bruce Draconarius, Finella Harper, Valeria Cabrielli, Tetchubah of Greenlake) to create a standard operating procedure (“SOP”) for Fund award management. As the Living Trust is significantly vague, several other good friends of Laura’s were consulted in the discovery phase to better understand Laura’s wishes and how they might be operationalized.

Determination

Laura’s wishes were simply to support the scribal community, including but not limited to recognizing scribes on the basis of merit, and that support should or could occur once per reign. In addition, Laura had specified to multiple people that the first recipient should be her apprentice, Emma Cardiganshire

Roles & Responsibilities

Selection Committee

The committee determines the award recipient and shall be comprised of:
  • The Scribe Armarius
  • Active scribal arts Laurels who are willing and/or able to serve
“Active” is defined herein as someone who has turned in a scroll or taught a scribal arts class within the last three reigns or eighteen (18) months
This person does not need to have originally received their laurel in scribal arts
NOTE: A peer must abstain from the vote if their apprentice is among the candidates

Candidate Qualifications

  • Candidates should be considered active journeyman scribes
“Active” is defined in the same way as above
“Journeyman” is defined herein as a scribe who has completed at least two non-AoA levels scrolls (the Scribe Armarius will track this data) or any scroll or manuscript arts project that is presented at any event with an attempt at documentation (the Laurels will help keep track of/report these persons)
  • Candidates should demonstrate improvement in their skill level but have not yet attained mastery as noted by the fact that they are not Laurels in the scribal arts
  • Laurels, regardless of their subject matter expertise, will not be considered for this award

Disbursement Specifications

  • The Award shall be in the amount of $250.00, to be granted at most once per reign, for a maximum of $500 every twelve months.
  • The Scribe Armarius shall present the award to the honoree at Summer Coronation and Winter Coronation, should a suitable recipient be determined.
  • Awardees cannot receive the award more than once.
  • In the absence of determining a suitable recipient, the Selection Committee may decide that the award sum for a given reign could be used to help the Scribal College or a local scribal group purchase intermediate supplies (e.g.Pergamenata, gilding materials, etc.) in the hopes that having access to such materials may excite and encourage scribes to take their art to the next level.
  • All local scribal groups, as well as the Scribal College, will be automatically entered into a lottery.
  • The group awarded the funds will be chosen via random lottery drawn by the Kingdom Minister of Arts and Sciences using a random picker site/software.
  • This option can be exercised at most once every three reigns.
  • A group awarded funds cannot be re-entered into the lottery until every group has won, at which time the lottery re-sets.
