Memories and Tributes
Please feel free to leave your memories of Njall.
- He helped me buy my first heavy rapier, moments before my first Estrella tournament, and I will never look at a bell-guard again. He was one my first rapier teachers, or at least one of the first I listened to. If you ever found me competent with a cloak, he is mostly responsible for showing me how effective a secondary a piece of fabric can be. He also guided and assisted in the construction of Matilda. If I've ever shot you in a melee, Don Njall is partially responsible. Long Live the Gun Squad! ~THLady Mealla Caimbeul
- It was always a pleasure to hear him Herald, especially at Great Western War. His voice was so awesome and clear. You could tell it was him from far away. I looked forward to hearing him herald at that war through Merchant's Row, usually smiling and helpful. ~Baroness Asakura Machime
- About 40 years ago, Aldred von Lechsend aus Froschheim (my father) and Njall were in the same reserve unit, used to play D&D at our house, and a few years later joined the SCA together. Njall loved to point out that he had known me longer than I had been in the SCA, because as a two year-old, I used to sit on his lap while they played D&D. He was very much my uncle, and could be firecely loyal, yet harshly critical at the same time. I will always remember him telling me how proud he was of the adult that I had become, and how supportive he was when I found myself deserted and actively targeted by people who I had believed to be my friends. It meant a great deal to me, and when he passed away from a heart attack a few years ago, It was heartbreaking. This weekend [23 December 2016], Ozmund Rus asked me to grab a specific Mjölnir (Thor's hammer) from his kit, because he had found the person to pass it onto. I was proud, because it was to my apprentice/protege William Ulfsson, but I did not know the pendant had been given to him by Njall's widow until such time as he found someone worthy to wear it. I will shed more tears in remembrance of my uncle, but that his legacy has been passed onto the son of my heart also makes me happy. Requiescat in pace Uncle Njall, the circle has closed, and your honor is in the good hands of your grand nephew. ~Mistress Aldgytha of Ashwood
- Njall and I went to college together. He spent a lot of time with another friend of mine at the same time, Carolus von Eulenhorst. He introduced me to my first wife. He was loud. He would eat my pizza. We were good friends. I remember he had a helmet at the time that was the most ugly, horribly crafted junk I'd ever seen. Looking up from the bottom, you could see light coming through where the welds were ground down to deep. It was slabs of metal bent together to create something that looked more like a pulp sci fi robot head than a helmet. So I made him a deal that I would trade him a helmet that I had made (too big for anyone else, but he was very tall), so long as I got his old helmet. He agreed and I cut that thing in half and it remained an illustration of what not to do in my armory for years. About the same time he got into archery, both at college and in the SCA. He excelled at it. After graduation we mostly lost touch. He married a lady who was able to bring out the best of him. He also developed his skill in fencing and in crafting fencing gear. I remember being very impressed by his skills at one of the demos he did. I remained in touch on a hit and miss basis after he left the Kingdom. I saw his last Facebook posting, "A hard night." It grieved me to hear of his passing. He was a good man. ~ Eadwynne of Runedun|
