The University of Ithra at Caid, 13-14 April. To be held at UC Riverside. Friday will be set-up and a light array of classes. Saturday there will be a full schedule of interesting, informative classes, and Saturday night only a few will be available, for those enthusiastic students. Sunday a complete list of courses is planned, with classes scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a special "SURVIVAL IN THE SCA" seminar for newcomers & folk who need more information about the SCA: how it runs, why & how the individual is expected to act within it. This will include one-hour lectures on everything from "Courtesy On & Off the Field" to "How to Choose a Name & Persona" to "Very Basic Heraldry" (for any who merely want to know how to design a device & how to register it correctly.)

If you have any questions which could be answered by this Special Seminar, or wish to know any information vital to your own survival in the SCA, then direct your queries to me as soon as possible so classes may be organized in time for cataloging.

Anyone with knowledge of a specialized area which they are willing to teach at Ithra, either in the regular 2 and 4 hour classes, or anything to add to the SURVIVAL IN THE SCA seminar, contact me without delay, please, so it may be added to the forthcoming catalog. I must hear from potential teachers BEFORE Feb. 26, 1979. -- Baroness Bjo of Griffin

ITHRA INFO The Univeristy of Ithra will be held on Easter weekend (April 14-15)at Riverside. The classes will be in Sproul Hall on the Univ. of Calif. at Riverside campus... If housing is needed, contact Lady Brann Morgan Dunmore of Galloway for crash-space in the Riverside area. Be prepared to pay your host $2.00 per night per peson for this cervice. Do not wait until the last minute!

Costumes, as usual, are required for students and instructors. Students planning to take courses in sewing, enameling or outdoor activities should avoid flowing sleeves, tipsy headdresses & accessories which dangle dangerously (or bring a change of clothing: mundane clothes are acceptable for the enameling class, in fact).

CHILDREN ARE NOT ALLOWED AT ITHRA UNLESS THEY ARE REGISTERED FOR CLASSES! There will be no babysitting arrangements & children will not be allowed to 'hang around the halls' without supervision at all times. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME IN MOST CLASSES., but are subject to the same rules of behavior that govern adults at Ithra.

If you get ill from flu or other problems, PLEASE stay home; your fees will be refunded cheerfully, rather than risk giving fellow students the plague! Most of us also live a full-time mundane life which includes jobs, etc., were loss of time for illness can mean revenue loss, also.

DO NOT PLAN ON LONG MEAL-HOURS: Ithra is for study, not partying. Some classes may require enough dedication for the student to bring a sack lunch & stay through meals. Instructors are especially requested to NOT plan on long lunch or dinner hours: please be thoughtful of your fellows who are ON TIME for classes! There are many restaurants around; a list will be available at registration.

This session of Ithra will have three "imported" instructors, Allyn Samildanach from the Principality of the Mists, will offer Celtic Illumination & Advanced Illumination Techniques (i9ncluding gilding); Yolanda del Campo from the Barony of Golden Rivers will teach a class on knitted lace & Venetian lace; Rodrigo de Cerdana from Golden Rivers will teach Medieval Games, Archery & team-teach with Yolanda in History & Practice of Calligraphy. These classes will give CAIDans a chance to learn new things from teachers not always available to us, so take advantage of these new classes.

Rodrigo will also offer, on Sunday afternoon, a "Royal Round" and Inter-kingdom Scoring in Archer, so anyone interested in adding CAID to SCA archery scores should plan on showing up.

In planning are several Workshops of either one eve, one day, or a whole weekend, for subjects not easily taught at a formal Ithra (stained glass, weaving) or for more heavy emphasis on one subject (military science, costuming, calligraphy, survival in the SCA) so watch for more information as plans develop.

Memories

  • I recall that there was an on-campus group of students from the Barony of Dreiburgen that helped make this happen. I believe Hrorek Halfdane of Faulconwood and Nikolaj Zrogowacialy were two of them. They inspired me to do something similar a few years later for Collegium Caidis Spring 1981. I wasn't involved much in this other than attending as a student, but I had a great time. My class with Allyn Samildanach awoke in me a love of Celtic Art. I also got a little informal fencing in (I lost - I hadn't learned the seventh and eighth parries yet). We had some non-SCA students take an interest in us, but mostly they seemed to think we were just odd. ~ Eadwynne of Runedun
