It's winter. We're bored. What's worse, then travel agent lost our reservations for the Holy Land Crusade tour. In desperation we've been forced to make a decision. . .

Instead of sun, sand, and Saladin we opted for the 7th Annual Isles-Darach Emnity Tournament! Moreover, we even have a good reason for picking on our southern neighbors. It seems the Darach folks always end up camping out in the Isles Pavilion at tourneys. WELL, Darach, it's time to pay the piper. . .

We'll see you on the Field of Honour (Toro Canon Park, Carpinteria, CA) on Saturday February 21, 1987. If we win, you pay rent on the Isles Pavilion for one year. If you win, you can stay another year. Bring friends, you may have to sleep under the stars!

Events for the day include:

  • Shinai and heavy weapons lists
  • the traditional Enemy Stalking contest
  • the even more traditional Poison Identification
  • the really traditional Pandybat(1) contest
  • the not very traditional Funereal Effigy contest
  • and the soon-to-be traditional Best Impersonation of either the Darach or Isles Seneschals
  • Revel TBA (fun for all ages)

More information from a later issue - Darach's replay to Isles
It's winter again. Isles is bored. And although it was their travel agent who botched things up, Isles is instead taking out their annoyance on the people of Darach. Now, Darach has no problems with boredom; we have the Yule season to celebrate, the War to prepare for, friends to visit, costumes to make, leaves to rake, and food to bake. We certainly don't have problems with idleness, and need not make baseless accusations at our neighbors just to pass the time.

It is a well-known fact that Darach has no need to occupy the Isles pavillion, as we of Darach have one of our own to use. However, it is rude to refuse invitations, and Isles often invites us to share their pavillion (presumably in hopes of making their numbers seem larger than they really are.) Now we discover that those invitations have been a sham, that Isles has been making them simply as an excuse to cast unfounded charges at us, and to challenge us to combat.

Yes, we will be there. At the Sixth Second Annual Darach/Isles Enmity Tourney (they can't even get the name right!) At Toro Canyon Park, outside the city of Carpinteria, on February 21st. Not to indulge them in their grandiose "Field of Honor," but to give them the example of good behavior they so clearly are in need of. As many of the people of Isles have yet to learn the lessons of maturity, we will indulge them excesses, and seek only to correct the most egregious of them. If correcting them requires combat, so be it. Heavy or light weapons, it makes no difference; we will have both.

While it is admitted that the list of activities is basically correct, there are historical errors in it. The Enemy Stalking contest is the only truly traditional one, as no other has been at all the Enmity Tourneys. Killing with Kindness and Poison Identification are becoming so. The Best Pandybat contest may become traditional, but hasn't become so yet. The Funereal Effigy contest and the Best Impersonation of the Darach or Isles Seneschal are new this year; their fate cannot yet be told.

As the Tourney is at the now-traditional site of Toro Canyon Park, the Revel is at its now-traditional site as well--the Red Barn owned by the now-subdued rebels of Carpinteria. For further details, call either Lady Thomasina MacGregor of Tay or Richard Vladimir Dracon. (A hand-drawn map accompanied the article.)

Notes:
(1)Pandybat: While it may have as its actual origin reference to a reinforced leather item used to punish schoolboys in 20th c. Ireland (from the Latin Pande manum - Hold out your hand), its SCA origins hail from the West Kingdom to describe improbable tourney weapons, including pole arms with various plush animals strapped to them with duct tape. While not approved for formal tourney combat, pandybat melees were always a source of great hilarity.
