THL Edith of Arbroath (formerly Edith of York, formerly Ædythe of Warwick) has been in the SCA since Angels Melee Tourney 1990 on 01/27/1990. Her personae was given as hostage to the Earl of Warwick, cementing a pact with her sire's clan. She was taught spinning, weaving and embroidery. Her skills increased and she was often commissioned to design and sew garb. Having pestered her English host, Edith was taught to read and write. When the monk-scribe fell ill, she took over his duties, designing and calligraphing numerous scrolls much to the delight of her host-captor.

At length, her sire (Dauid Maelchon) secured her release from Warwick but she was held at York because of the "Troubles" betwixt Stephen and the Empress Matilda. Her kindred staunchly supported David I and the Earl of Gloucester. Whilst at York, she took up arms, delighting in sword/shield, mace and glave and was included in the Brotherhood of the Blade, much to her lady-mother's dismay.

Edith was sequestered, for some years, caring for her beloved sire. After his peaceful death, she returned to Caid.

Garb

Edith's Garb

Red Gown: Inspired by 1300 gown. Made from a medium weight 100% wool, it laced up the front [for convenience] instead of buttoning. The undergown was 100% cotton & the veil was a silk/rayon blend.

Elizabethan Peasant Garb: I pieced leather patches to make the bodice, used 100% cotton for the chemise as well as the red plaid skirt. I embroidered a Celtic lion on the pouch.

English Elizabethan 1540: This was my first attempt at structured garb Copper colored upholstry fabric for over skirt & bodice. Taffeta was used for the front & on the under skirt. I used mundane rickrack [but it was shiny!] and used the same taffeta for the summer sleeves as on the underskirt. Modeled by Alyse.

Garb for Others

Dun Or Stepping Up Garb late 1390: Iain Glic macRobert: made from 100% cotton velveteen with a wide band of trim purchased in London. I inkle'd selvage bands to finish the trim down the front & cuffs. -- Theresia diu Harpfærîn: printed 100% cotton velveteen sideless gown with solid velveteen undergown. By request, there was no train. (05/15/1999)
Dun Or Stepping Up Garb late 1390: Until crowned, the Baroness wore a buckram hat made from the same fabric as the undergown. It was Velcro'd in the back to adjust to veil and/or hairstyle. (05/15/1999)

Italian Garb (2011)
1560-70 Italian men's garb: From inspiration painting to my design to finished product. The fabric was silk with the chemises [male & female] made from linen. (2011)
1580 Italian Women's garb: From inspiration painting to my design to finished product. The fabric was silk with the chemises [male & female] made from linen. Because of body-type, an adjustment was made on the lady-corset so it wouldn't dig into the hip during the day. (2011)
Italian Man 1570: Teal silk jerkin & brown silk slops worn with a 100% cotton shirt. Also, appropriately accoutremented cod-piece.

The Green Cloak was worn by Baroness Morgaine FitzStephen on her recent trip to Ireland. I made it from 100% wool woven on the Isle of Lewis for Rob Roy. Because the fabric was limited, I used a felted dark green down the front and back of the cloak & a plaid "school" kilt [purchased at Salvation Army] that I over-dyed green to match the other fibers. I used trim [purchased from Justina] down the front & a clasp at the neck. Morgaine told me it kept her toasty-warm in the Irish Breezes.
Phrygian caps made for Baroness Cecilia Medici to give as largess at Altavia Anniversary 2016. This photo is before I added the trim.

Sewing Projects

Colm Kyle chair cover: 100% cotton duck base. The devices were appliqué & put on the pockets of the chairs – one on each side. Because they had a doggie, knotted dogs ran around the hem & were painted with thinned acrylic paint (from Home Depot).
Honour Greenhart chair cover: 100% cotton duck base. The devices were appliqué & put on the pockets of the chairs – one on each side. Because they had a doggie, knotted dogs ran around the hem & were painted with thinned acrylic paint (from Home Depot).
Colm Kyle & Honour Greenhart chair cover: I was commissioned to make a "guest" chair cover that had Colm's device on one side and Honour's on the other. The knotted dogs didn't go all the way around this cover.
Letizia's chair cover: Made from upholstery fabric [undetermined content but was washable]. The challenge was to make a pocket for the fold-up side table attached to the chair & have the medallions match.

Multi-coloured 8x10 tent was made with four 8ft wooden corner poles and two 10ft poles with another 10ft aluminum rod as the roof pole. It had a screened window [that zipped up at night] on one side & another in the back, level with the side poles 12in x 30in for cross-ventilation – this tied from inside. The "door" could be tied shut.
Sunbrella Tent was based on the Hillary that fell apart. It had a large window in the front and the door had two flaps that tied; large one over the smaller. It gets cold at Estrella or Westie events.
