In spite of the very, very cold weather (33 degrees at 7:30 a.m. and 37 degrees at 4:30 p.m.), it was a beautiful day for Angels' Melee 2013 - bright, blue sky, lots of sunshine and no rain! We had a wonderful day and would like to take this time to say "Thank You" to everyone who was a part of yesterday's planning and festivities:
- Their Majesties for joining us at the event and for Their thoughtful presentation
- Don Laertes McBride for the beautiful flowers
- Lord Ioan Breaksword for his work as event steward and Marshal, and for the eric set-up
- Lord Gerrit d'Orleans for a very smooth set-up and tear down, and for marshaling
- Lady Ysenda MacLaren of Perthshire for her service as Baronial Seneschal and as Chatelaine
- Lady Selewynn Beltran, Lady Kathryn du Griffin, Maestra Flavia Beatrice Carmigniani, Lord Caspian Blackrune, and THL Kiena le Blue for their assistance with our three new members who are visually-impaired (THL Kiena even provided a bench for them to sit on, and both THL Kiena and Lord Caspian allowed them to touch and feel armor!)
- THL Fu Ching Lan for her unending patience as our Chief Lady in Waiting - there is so much she does behind the scenes that allows us to enjoy beautiful pagentry and have fun
- Lady Angharat Goch verch Gwenhover, the new Seraph Bard, for her beautiful song at opening court
- Lady Amanda Januaria of Silver Woods for running Lists
- Lady Dalphina Delacroix for her care and feeding of the Rafflemeister

- Lord Lorenzo di Vita, Lady Róis ni Brian, Don Lot Ramirez, Don Laertes McBride and the many rapier fighters and marshals who looked like they were having way too much fun - and the "flying animals" scenario was awesome to watch! Thank you so much for coming to play!
- Baron Bryce ap Morgan, Baron Conor de Carlton, Duke Dietrich von Vogelsang, Lord Gerrit d'Orleans, Duchess Mora de Buchanan and all the armored fighters who came out to fight and marshal - it was wonderful to see so many fighters enjoying the day!

- To all the combat archers - thank you especially for your patience with the new netting - it was a "beta test" design and we hope to have it much improved by Medieval Marketplace so that we can have combat archery at that event

- Lady Kathryn du Griffin for handing out cards to the cars coming onto the site so that we did not exceed the number of vehicles that were allowed on the site.
If we have missed anyone who contributed to the day's events, please know that it is not intentional and we are truly sorry. There are so many people who work hard to make an event happen that sometimes our old memory just doesn't remember everyone.
And, congratulations to LADY Maisha of Angels on receiving her AoA - it is well deserved.
We hope everyone enjoyed the day in spite of the cold temperature and we look forward to seeing one and all again over the next few months.

Event Steward: Ioan Breaksword
The snows are melting in the mountain pass. The crops are planted. Our enemies are readying their swords and armor. You are itching to hit something (or someone). The time has come to pull your armor from the wagon and fix that strap that threatened to snap all last year. Its time to take your sword to the blacksmith and remove the rust and fix the handle.
IT IS TIME FOR MELEE!!!
The Barony of the Angels invites all fighters (and everyone else) to the first fighting event of 2013. Come join us on January 12th for a day of heavy weapons and rapier war scenarios.
To allow time for as much combat as possible, Court will start at 9:30 a.m.. Please contact Baron John if you have business with the court before the event or at least 30 minutes before the court opens.
This year the barony will be initiating the “EDGAR THE ARCHER MEMORIAL ARROW TRAP.“ A fully enclosed fighting eric that allows an archer to fire in 360 degrees. Yes that’s right, the 80x80ft melee eric will be enclosed within a 100x100ft archery netting eric that will allow combat archers to fully participate. With this in mind half the SCENARIOS WILL ALLOW COMBAT ARCHERY!!!!
On this day Armored Combat will consist of 10 man teams with an optional 11th member who can only be an archer. So Archers should show up early to have your equipment checked. It is also anticipated, that the Barony’s new digital/precision Bow Scale with be making its maiden appearance, so check your draw weights before arriving so you may pass inspection without incident.
With archery present in half of the scenarios we ask all Marshals bring SCA-approved safety goggles!
The scenarios will start with a 10 man close quarters “Bear Pit” as a warm up. Then will move to other scenarios till the closing of fighting sometime between 3:30 -4:00 p.m.
Other battles include:
- Open Field (Of course)
- Bridge (Large)
- Bridge (Narrow)
- Broken field (Unless I can find a really big tube of super glue)
- Gate
- And others to be announced.
RAPIER: The rapier community will also be running a variety of scenarios in their own 80x80 eric.
RAFFLE:
An Angels’ Raffle is planned. If you would like to contribute goods for the raffle, please bring completed baskets or items to the event or contact the event steward.
ARTS AND SCIENCES: Angels Arts and Sciences also invites you to participate in the Illuminated Letter Contest. There will be prizes for adult and youth divisions. Bring your creativity and be prepared to show off your artistic skills.
All SCA rules for youth participation apply. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Merchants are welcome! Please contact angelsmelee@sca-angels.org to reserve your space. All Merchants are required to pay the gate fee and remember that 10% of your gross profit must be given to the County of Los Angeles.
Schedule
- 7:00 am Site opens
- 9:00 am Lists open
- 9:30 am Opening Court
- 10:30 am (approx) Fighting starts
- 4:00 pm Closing Court
- 6:00 pm Everyone must be off the site
We are limited to EIGHT cars at a time on the site, so please unload and load quickly and follow instructions as given by the Constabulary.
Pets must be on leashes. This is a dry site. There is NO SMOKING on the site; you must go all the way out onto the sidewalk to smoke!
Please contact the Event Steward below to reserve eric space. Reservations will be taken until January 7.

Directions. Take your favorite freeway to the 210 Fwy. Exit at Pennsylvania Avenue. From the West, turn right onto Pennsylvania. From the East, turn left onto Pennsylvania. Everyone turns right at Honolulu. Turn left at Dunsmore and you’re there!
