Memories

I feel rather guilty offering this memory since so many wonderful and beautiful things happened at this event. But my memory is not about one of those things. Due to the preponderance of Puns at Court events, King Gregory instituted a Pun Tax for the duration of his reign. At this 12th Night, where King Gregory sat at the head table, I decided to present a toast. Having neither glass nor wine, I went into the kitchen and found Hrorek Halfdane of Faulconwood working in the kitchen. I mentioned that I had not eaten (which was true) and I asked him to provide me with a small crust of bread. I could see his internal turmoil because he wanted to be generous, but it was the "King's Bread" after all and not his. But he mercifully gave me a small piece anyway.

I took the small crust of bread and found several conspirators to share it with (safety in numbers), and asked the herald to allow us to perform "a toast." The poor unsuspecting herald obliged, and we did... saying, "To the righteous lawgiver of the land... A Toast!" We held up the bread and then ate it before the assembly. I like to remember that the toast was welcomed with thunderous applause, but I think it was probably more like groans and booing. And if looks could kill, Gregory would have had my head on a spit. I made sure that double the amount of pun-tax was put into the Royal Pun Tax Jar, in hopes to keep my head attached to my body.

Hrorek called me aside later. And in a quiet, even tone he admonished me, "Had I known what you were going to do, I never would have given you that bread." I nodded, explaining, "Yes, I know. That is why, out of respect, I didn't tell you. I would never wish to tarnish your reputation." I'm not sure he ever quite forgave me. And I've never asked him for more bread.

Now the Kingdom Herald, if I recall, was Master Conrad von Regensburg. AND, if I recall correctly, he had convinced the Crown to make an exception to the Pun Tax for heralds. "Heralds do not pun, they Cant." Heralds will understand. ~ Eadwynne of Runedun
