Memories
I recall that many people felt that the Principality of CAID was not ready to become a Kingdom because no Caidan had ever won the Crown of the West Kingdom. That changed when the Western Crown was won by Duke Gregory. The Principality of CAID became the Kingdom of Caid during his reign and since King Gregory of York and Queen Bevin Fraser of Sterling were "at residence in Caid" they were issued Green Cards at Caid's First Coronation Festival 1978.
I was at a Heatherwyne Anniversary when Gregory was King. A couple of bikers came up and began laughing at us saying that we didn't know what a real fight was like. Gregory got "that look" on his face and said something to the effect of, "If you feel that way, you are welcome to put on some armor and see if that's true." The larger of the two, a huge, bald, barrel-chested fellow with muscles on his muscles accepted the challenge. Armor was found for him and Gregory himself offered to engage him. By the time the fellow had the armor mostly on, he realized he couldn't see, he couldn't move the way he expected, and he was already suffering from in-helmet claustrophobia. Without much grace, the fellow demanded that the armor be removed from his body, and those that had helped him in, then helped him out.
But the smaller of the two, about six foot two and also well-muscled, did get into armor. He was patient enough to learn our rules and stepped into the field with Gregory. The larger fellow watched, grimly and quietly. The other fellow put out all he had trying to hit Greg. Gregory was as graceful as a swan and it didn't look like he broke a sweat. Finally, the fellow, out-of-breath and never landing a blow, dropped his sword and acquiesced, saying, "You're pretty good." Gregory, simply replied, "That's why I'm King." The marshals took Gregory aside afterwards and asked him if the fight could be considered a fighting authorization, since all was done in accordance with the rules of the game. Gregory said, "Why not?" Somewhere, in the records of the day, lies the man's authorization. ~ Eadwynne of Runedun
