Memories
At one of the SCA wars, Great Desert War II, I think, we were able to put on a "deer hunt game," with Roger de Boeuf who volunteered to be the deer. He was a cross country runner. He could out pace a greyhound. We never could catch him. We would see him on a ridge and before we'd get to the top of it, he'd be three ridges farther away... behind us. Somewhere near sunset he returned to us and asked us where all the hunters had gone. I told him that they'd quit hours earlier. I then asked him why it took so long for him to come back. He simply said, "I was having a good time running." Roger was also our cook. All I can say is that he was a mighty fine cook and he worked literally tirelessly. At one war (perhaps the same one), I was sharing a tent with Elgil. It was a great day fighting and a great night partying. But morning came way too early. Roger had been as active as any of us, but he was up at the crack of dawn washing dishes from the night before, and making breakfast. He called into our tent and asked if we wanted omelets, bacon, sausage, fresh-squeezed orange juice, etc., etc. Of course we said, "Sure," although it probably sounded like muffled grumbles. When everything was ready, he asked if we were coming out or whether he should bring it to us. Elgil and I looked at each other in amazement. And, without either of us prompting the other we both said, "Feed me!" Roger had a long fuse, but this lit it. Fortunately he didn't toss everything out, and we happily ate what he made. He forgave us eventually. He was that kind of guy. ~ Eadwynne of Runedun
