Memories

The First Caidan Twelfth Night Celebration was held on January 9, 1971 on the grounds of the Bull and Bush Public House in Costa Mesa, California, which was, at the time a part of the Barony of the Angels. His Occidental Majesty Jean de la Grand'Anse, King of the West, was in attendance and notably, the Seraph Pursuivant, Sarkanyi Gero, and His Excellency, Viscount Christian of Orange, the Baronial Knight Marshal took the opportunity of His Majesty's presence to swear fealty. The Honorable Lord Jerome Robert of McKenna was named the Knight's Marshal for the growing Barony of Calafia, which had been founded in November, 1970. A tournament was held, with the victor, whose name is known only to posterity, granted the honour of naming their lady the fairest of the day.

Perhaps, however, of greatest historical note, it was at this first Twelfth Night Celebration that His Excellency, Pwyll pen Tyrhon, Baron of the Angels, with the permission of His Majesty Jean created the first Baronial Award in the SCA, the Order of the Seraphic Star awarded to those who, through their acts of service, considerably enrich the Barony of the Angels. Among those first named Companions of the Order were Baron Pwyll himself, who was named the Principal of the Order, Lord Charles Edward Alexander Everman, Viscount Christian of Orange, Baron Friedrich Eric Helmut von Rheinhausen, and Baron Sarkanyi Gero.
