Renaissance Dinner Finds Favor at Caltech

On the last day but one of the old year A.S. XVII (that is to say, April 29, 1983). a Renaissance dinner was given at that famous seat of medieval learning (?!?), the California Institute of Technology. The site was the Institute's very exclusive private club, the Athenaeum, and the event was organized, costumed, and had entertainment largely provided by the Society for Creative Anachronism. The idea was originally mooted by Caltech's Don Caldwell (whose madrigal singers were almost the only non-SCA entertainment present) and the account which follows should reveal the broad range of SCA talent and cooperation which exists and which we hope to make available for many future events of a similar kind.

The evening began with pre-dinner country dancing accompanied by a quarter from "The Fyne Companions" whose Lady Ambriel is well-known to Caid. Tripping the light fantastic in the Athenaeum courtyard were Baron Conrad von Regensburg, Master Alewaulfe the Red, Master Duryn the Red, Edward Dusayne, Her Highness, the Crown Princess of Caid, Natalya Gregorovna, Lady Lavendar of Lorne, Lady Thea Gabrielle Northernridge, and Rhiannon Jordsdottir. They were immediately followed by fighters Sir Einar aus Enwelt and Lord Francis Burnell of Selkirk, whose demonstration made a palpable hit with the "Duke and Duchess of Millikan" in whose honor the feast was given!

Baron Conrad, whose heraldry throughout the evening was a model of elegance and tact, announced dinner, a two course extravaganza that had been arranged by Mistress Huette, and te Athenaeum chef, Elly Adrien. The between course entertainment included Crown Princess Natalya singing The Trees, They Grow High, Roberta Berg playing three selections on her viola de gamba, and a joint performance of sonnets by Her Highness and Lord Gwyllym y Gryffyn ap Rhys.

After dinner found the local dignitaries being amused with court dancing (all dancing was directed by Mistress Huette, three scenes from Shakespeare (performed by Don Caldwell, Don Warburton, Roberta Berg, and Lady Lavendar, and six songs by Caltech's Chamber Singers. These, and dessert, concluded the evening's activities.

Special thanks are due to Master Alewaulfe, Lady Dana of Coleraine, Mistress Huette, Duke Martin the Temperate, Lord Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme, Roberta Berg, Stacy Stein and the Caltech Theater Arts office for costumes and props; to Mistress Huette Aliza von und zu Ährens und Mechthildberg|Huette]] and Lady Lavendar who coordinate this event and to Her Highness Natalya, Baron Conrad and Lady Thea for being there and kept us from going crazy.
