In addition to the Lyon Bard (details below) and Bard of Gyldenholt competitions (details pending) there is another opportunity for performers at our Yule. The theme is that of an Inn, and part of the hall will be set up as a tavern with Inn of the Crimson Spade providing gaming. As such, during times other than court and the above mentioned competitions, entertainment may be offered in the tavern area. Please keep in mind that you may not have a focused audience, this might be more of background ambiance. If you are interested, you may contact the event autocrat ahead of time, ot there will be a sign-up sheet on site.

Lyon Bard Competition

From Lady Cecilia Lightfoot, current Lyon Bard

I invite all to participate in the 9th Annual Lyon Bard Competition, to be held during the joint Lyondemere and Gyldenholt Yule Celebration on Saturday, December 11th 2010 in Bellflower. The Lyon Bard competition will take place after court, which begins at 3:30 pm.

The Lyon Bard position was created to encourage excellence in historical performance arts and in original compositions done in an historical manner. The competition is open to singers, poets, storytellers, actor-playwrights, and musicians. To encourage a breadth of knowledge, competitors are asked to perform in more then one style of performance (for example; sing two songs and recite a poem or play an instrument, sing a song and tell a story, etc.) The primary responsibilities as Lyon Bard include to take his/her place in Their Excellencies court and to perform at the required events. To encourage new bards and bardic activity in the barony as well as the kingdom. To compose new material at the request of Their Excellencies, (possibly In honor of or In praise of the Kingdom, Her Monarchs, The Barony, and other praiseworthy topics.) The champion’s deeds must reflect honor, the talent and knowledge of which they have earned their position should be used for the greater glory of the Barony of Lyondemere and the encouragement of their art.

For the competition, come prepared to perform three pieces on the following topics:

1. One piece must be historical, documentable to pre-1650, as long as the style was in existence prior to 1600. [Bring documentation, and bring lyrics (if any).]

2. One piece is themed on anything that reminds the performer of Lyondemere; such as being by the sea, genealogy of Lyondemere's Barons and Baronesses, the tale of a sea-lion, ode to the ladies of Lyondemere, and so on. [Bring lyrics (if any), and description of the historical style of the piece.]

3. One piece to focus on a piece of the History of the SCA in some fashion: History of Caid, history of Lyondemere, history of some activity in the SCA (such as an event, the chivalry, a particular renowned individual, martial activities, any of the arts and sciences, or volunteering). [Bring lyrics (if any), and a description of the historical style of the piece.]

4. A minimum of one original piece composed by the competitor from section 2 or 3 is required.

Further Notes: The original piece(s) may be performed to existing music or a pre-existing piece may be performed as long as is either out of copyright, or the performer has the copyright holder's permission. If a pre-existing tune is used, judging preference may be shown to compositions using tunes composed prior to the year 1650. The longest piece may not exceed 10 minutes. Documentation is required, telling the provenance of the historical piece, and the style of the original pieces. A copy of the words should be included.

Ground Rules: This is a 1-year commitment that includes these required events in Lyondemere (Arts and Archery, Anniversary, Yule and the competition for a successor). It is for skill in both composition and performance. This honor is for a single person, not a group, though one may perform with backup musicians or singers. The holder of the title is determined by competition, with multiple performances on specified themes. The holder may not succeed himself or herself. The competition is open to singers, poets, storytellers, actor-playwrights, and musicians. If the Lyon Bard is unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, then the position will go to the first runner-up, at the Baroness's discretion.

Responsibilities also include: (a) To perform a piece at Lyondemere Arts and Archery and Lyondemere Yule. The piece may be either original or historical and does not need to be composed specifically for the event.

(b) To perform an original piece at Lyondemere Anniversary. This does need to be composed specifically for the event. The theme is "Lyondemere." It could be a fight song, a praise poem, a love song, a satire, whatever the Lyon Bard is inspired to do.

(c) To publish the Anniversary or Yule time piece in the Tydes. The submission should be arranged with the Chronicler.

(d) To perform a piece at each Lyondemere sponsored event attended. This is in lieu of the site fee; please arrange details ahead of time with the baron or baroness. The performance may not be at court, but rather at the Baronial pavilion sometime during the day at a mutually agreed-upon time. The piece may be either original or historical, but need not be composed specifically for the event.

(e) To run the competition that determines his or her successor. The Lyon Bard does not autocrat the event, just the portion that is the contest.

Rights include: (a) To be admitted to any Lyondemere-sponsored event without paying the gate fee. (See responsibilities note (d) above.) (b) To eat the feast at Lyondemere Yule and Lyondemere Anniversary without paying the feast fee. (c) To be seated at head table at Lyondemere Yule and Lyondemere Anniversary if there is a feast during the event. (d) To wear the token of the Lyon Bard.

If the Lyon Bard is unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, then the position will go to the first runner-up, at the Baroness's discretion.

All bards and performers are encouraged to participate! The Barony of Lyondemere appreciates and encourages all levels of performance, regardless of experience. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Any further questions regarding this competition should be directed to Her Excellency Baroness Eva filia Edeneweyn at baroness@lyondemere.org or Baron Jon Thomme de Claydon baron@lyondemere.org or the current Lyon Bard, Lady Cecilia Lightfoot at lyonbard@lyondemere.org. Please contact Lady Cecilia, or the Autocrat, if you are planning to compete.
