The only daughter of Nicolai Frederic Séverin, Nicolete was saddened to see her six brothers off to the Third Crusade as she began her court service to her lifelong friend Isabelle de Hainaut, first wife of Philippe II of France. Part of her parents' marriage contract required her, the first daughter, to spend her childhood summers with her grandmother in her mother's native Douglas region of Scotland. There she learned the healing arts and midwifery. These skills allowed her to help Isabelle survive the birth of her first child, but Nicolete was unsuccessful in saving Isabelle, or the twins, after the second pregnancy. Out of favor, and in light of the dislike of Isabelle at court, Nicolete was sent home to Flanders where her father had been managing their family's estate and the upbringing of several younger cousins. Her support was a relief as news arrived of the loss of four of her brothers at the battles of Acre and Arsuf. At twenty-four years old, in 1190, Nicolete had no court responsibilities and no more requirement to travel to Scotland since her grandmother had passed on. Nicolete's father began to demand that she marry, thinking that she might have to produce an heir to the estate. As suitors began to present themselves, her two surviving brothers made their way home and brought with them her nephew, Alexander, the son of her oldest brother who had died at Arsuf. He had married a Christian woman who died in childbirth. Nicolete's brothers also brought home a friend, Sean Fitzpatrick, the second son of an Irish lord. Sean stayed on at the estate and he and Nicolete were married two years later. | The only daughter of Nicolai Frederic Séverin, Nicolete was saddened to see her six brothers off to the Third Crusade as she began her court service to her lifelong friend Isabelle de Hainaut, first wife of Philippe II of France.
