Oddmarr sviðbalki (SVITH-ball-kee, aka "The Troublemaker") is an early 10th-century merchant originally from Svinninge on the Jutland peninsula. He fought with King Guthrum’s “Great Heathen Army,” and after the treaty of the Danelaw, he and his young family moved to a farmstead outside of the town of Jorvik in the British kingdom of Northumbria. Sensing an unexploited opportunity in this new country, Oddmarr began a side business exporting, among other commodities, soapstone, whale blubber, and sealskins from the outliers in the North Sea to his former countrymen in Denmark and beyond into the land of the Slavs. In turn, he imports Slavic luxury goods to Denmark and Jorvik.
