Bard of Caid Rules 2016

The competition for Bard of Caid 2016 will closely follow the format implemented by Lord Paul fitz Denis, the 10th Bard of Caid, for Bard of Caid 2015, with several small adjustments.

Competition Format

  • The selection of the 12th Bard of Caid will involve two parts: a preliminary set of rounds to determine the finalists, and a final round.
  • Competitors in all performance styles are encouraged to participate. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Dance Performance
    • Vocal Performance
    • Instrumental Performance
    • Poetry
    • Storytelling
  • Competitors may choose to invite other performers to assist them in each round; however, only an individual can be named Bard of Caid.
  • Former Bards of Caid who are not interested in judging are encouraged to compete.

Preliminary Rounds

There will be three preliminary rounds, each at a different event, each with a different focus:

  • Festival of the Rose, Saturday, August 20th: A period piece (documented to pre-1650)
  • Calafia Anniversary, Saturday, November 5th: This year, Their Majesties have chosen Get The Party Started as this year's theme.
  • Starkhafn Yule, Saturday, December 17th: A piece composed on-site using three words, chosen by King, Queen, and the 11th Bard of Caid, and announced that day

Format

  • The champion of each preliminary round will be announced and awarded a prize.
  • In order to become the next Bard of Caid, a competitor must participate in at least two of the three preliminary rounds (see Determining Finalists).
  • Judges for the preliminary rounds will be the Crown (at their discretion), the 11th Bard of Caid, and a past Bard of Caid.
  • In each round, each competitor will receive a score from each judge. The scores will be tallied and the feedback sheets returned at the end of that round.
  • The competitor with the highest combined score will be named the champion of that round.

Scoring

  • There will be a scoring rubric (see Judging Sheets below) for each individual round.
  • Each score sheet will have a total number of points possible to be awarded.
  • Each question on the score sheet will have a specific point value.
  • Each judge will have an additional 10 points per round to award to competitors at their discretion.

Determining Finalists

  • To qualify for the Final Round, each competitor must participate in a minimum of two of the three preliminary rounds.
  • If a competitor chooses not to participate in a round, they will receive zero points for that round.
  • Of the three preliminary rounds, the lowest score for each competitor will be dropped, and the highest two scores will be totalled.
  • The three competitors with the highest totals will be invited to perform in the finals at Twelfth Night.

Final Round

  • The final round will take place at Twelfth Night, at a time that will be determined by the Crown and Heirs.
  • The final round piece will be Bard's Choice.
  • Preliminary scores will hold no bearing on judging for the final round.
  • The final round will be judged by the incoming King and Queen, the current Bard of Caid, and a former Bard of Caid.
  • The 12th Bard of Caid will be announced at Twelfth Night.

Judging Sheets

Judging Sheet for Festival of the Rose (35 points possible)

Selection (1 point possible for each bullet point, total of 2 points possible)

  • How appropriate for the event is the piece?
  • How well-matched to the performer is the piece?

Difficulty (3 points possible)

  • How difficult is the piece on a scale of 1-3?

Documentation (1 point possible for each bullet point, total of 6 points possible)

  • Is context given to establish:
    • Who?
    • What?
    • Where?
    • When?
  • Is the period form or style explained? (Why? How?)
  • Is the documentation between 1 and 3 pages? (sheet music does not count against the page limit)

Execution (2 points possible for each bullet point, total of 8 points possible)

  • Was the performer adequately prepared?
  • Was the performer clearly heard and understood?
  • Did the performer understand and interpret the piece appropriately?
  • Did the performer make effective use of gestures, facial expressions, clothing, props, etc.?

Performance (2 points possible for each bullet point, total of 6 points possible)

  • Did the performer connect with the audience?
  • Did the performer’s introduction enhance the piece?
  • Did the performer’s stage presence enhance the piece?

Discretionary Points (10 points possible)

  • To be awarded at each judge's discretion

Selection (4 points possible)

  • Does the piece tie into the theme of Get The Party Started?

Difficulty (3 points possible)

  • How difficult is the piece on a scale of 1-3?

Execution (2 points possible for each bullet point, total of 10 points possible)

  • Does it sound like the piece is appropriate to the performer's skill level?
  • Did the performer have their piece memorized?
  • Was the performer clearly heard and understood?
  • Did the piece avoid obtrusively modern references? (No recognizably modern tunes, pop culture references, etc.)
  • Did the performer make effective use of gestures, facial expressions, clothing, props, etc.?

Performance (2 points possible for each bullet point, total of 8 points possible)

  • Did the performer seem confident?
  • Did the performer connect with the audience?
  • Did the performer’s introduction enhance the piece?
  • Did the performer’s stage presence enhance the piece?

Discretionary Points (10 points possible)

  • To be awarded at each judge's discretion
