Archery at GWW 25
Greetings from the Great Western War 25 Archery Co-Steward! This year's setup of the range has been something I've wanted to do since we started having the war at this site. Thanks to the war stewards Mistress Cara Michelle DuValier & Sir Gavin MacDhomhnuill and the whole GWW 25 staff, working with you all was a pleasure. I would like to thank my Archery Co-Steward, Cedron Grea, who worked tirelessly, including managing all the correspondence and computer stuff and running two night shoots. Also I would like to thank our deputies for their marshaling: Lord Ronan de Bhal and THL Paul Stoddard (who ran all the novelties on Friday), as well as Kathryn de Beziers, who made all the marshal favor pouches with the Academy of Archers device on them. Speaking of marshals, thanks to the 14 marshals from three different kingdoms (Caid, Artemisia and a Duchess from the East), who helped with the lines and range safety; all were given favors Kathryn made.
Now for the results for the War events that I ran, starting with the GWW Team Championship, developed a few years ago when Baron Christoff wanted a team shoot for the war. The competition is a Royal Round where each team member shoots one of the four distances to complete the round. There were two times set for the teams to come and shoot together as a team, but teams could sign up in advance and have members shoot their distances separately, also. We had three teams complete the shoot. 1st. Barony Gwersten from Artemisia/East, scoring a Royal Round of 76. Members were (40) Ryryd ap Gwerstan (30) Poplyr Childs (20) Finan MacBressail & (20speed) Alfdis Hakansdotter 2nd. Archery Staff from Caid, scoring a Royal Round of 58. Members were (40) Ronan de Bhal (30) Cedron Grea (20) Paganus Grimlove & (20speed) Paul Stoddard 3rd. Calafia Engineers from Caid, scoring a Royal Round of 34. Members were (40) Devin Hill (30) Andrew (20) Jack of the Green (20speed) Monty
The Dreiburgen Round was shot on Friday; we had 5 archers take up the challenge. Created 35 years ago by Master Wilihelm Roderick FitzLovel of Kerr, the round consists of two untimed ends at 40 yards, 30 yards, 20 yards and 60 yards added together, shot on a 60cm target. All distances are scored 1 thru 5 except the 60 yard target, which is doubled (i.e. 2,4,6,8,&10) and every arrow that misses the scoring rings but hits the hay at that distance earns one point. Number of arrows shot in an end is six. All archers also shot timed ends at 20 yards for score to complete two Royal Rounds.
- 1st. Paganus Grimlove from Dreiburgen scored 145
Completed Royal Rounds 81 & 85
- 2nd. Phillip de Dauphine from Kingdom of Atenveldt scored 126
Completed Royal Rounds 57 & 59
- 3rd. Aaron of Starkhafn scored 125
Completed Royal Rounds 60 & 58
- 4th. Tryggr Tryeson from Kingdom of An Tir scored 88
Completed Royal Rounds 63 & 72
- 5th. Ronan de Bhal from Dreiburgen scored 82
Completed Royal Rounds 51 & 61
This year we also had the annual Kingdom Archery and Thrown Weapons Championships (known as The Caidan Open) held on Saturday and Sunday of the war. This would normally be held as a completely separate day event, and unfortunately, it pushed the other war events off the weekend. The temperatures for the weekend were 97 on Saturday and 101 on Sunday. I would like to thank Lord Ronan de Bhal and Lord Henry Dumas for stepping in to run the Open and Period divisions in place of last year's winners, who could not be there on Saturday. The results for the 30th Anniversary of the Caidan Open Archery and Thrown Weapons Championships are as follows:

If I missed anyone, my apologies. Cedron and I plan to Co-Steward again next year and expand on what we did this year, with the kingdom championships returned to their own event. We are considering adding a roving range set up in the evenings before dark. If you like what we did this year, spread the word or contact us about hosting a shoot next year. Let's see if we can double the numbers of archers who come to war to play.
