Thorfinnr is an 10th century Varangian Guardsman hailing from Norway.  While in service to Basil II thorfinnr learned to read and write in greek.  When he was proficient enough, he occupied his free time reading classics, such as Homer, Herodotus and Xenophon.  Thorfinnr became so obsessed with the stories of ancient Greek warriors, that he decided to model his armor after the famed Hoplites of times long past to pay them hommage.
