Ritter Augustine von Freiburg
fallen in Fall Crown Tourney, A.S. XLII
Ritter von Freiburg, a Son of the Lorelei,
Pride of his brethren, this newly made Knight,
In Signy’s honor, both words and blows he’ll let fly
He is her Champion, she is his light.
Red-bearded Augustine laid low a Baroness,
(Albeit an armored one!) this autumn morn,
Seeks he a monarch’s Crown, that, neither more nor less;
To make his lady Queen, battle is borne.
Alas for Augustine, he meets a mountain—
His web cannot contain Viking for long.
In that bout, by that hand, his blood will fountain:
’Tis Gunnar the clever, the generous, the Strong.
Half-faint with loss of blood, he meets O’Malley,
A respite is not enough strength to restore,
With him, great General does not choose to dally,
Is Ritter von Freiberg among us no more?
Where there was joy, shall there be lamentation?
Shall great reward be supplanted by grief?
Mourning for merriment’s no compensation,
Therefore Death’s grip on this Lord must be brief!
He laughs too much, so in Hell he’s not welcome,
Charon refuses to ferry him o’er
The famous Styx, and the feast hall that he’s from,
(I mean Valhalla) has shown him the door.
Valor he’s lacking? That can’t be the reason.
Honor and kindness? He couldn’t show more.
Secretly, all wish to give him this season
To fight—and to write—e’er he pass into lore.
