*I first met Sir Luther at a Dreiburgen fighting practice at Adrian Buchanon's place, informally known as 616 1/2. He had recently made his own breastplate. He told me that his goal in life was to be "a metal artist." The breastplate was simple with quite a bit of texture, but it fit and although a little crude, it was not a bad first attempt. He also didn't shine much as a fighter as his blows were more like hammering a nail than attacking an opponent. Obviously, he got much, much better. He was quiet and dedicated. He took his crafts seriously. I often use him as an example to new artisans and fighters in the SCA as a source of inspiration. All this being said, he also wasn't afraid to party and I remember quite a few wild times with him and our mutual friend Ragnar Torbjörn. I recall at one event there was an axe throwing context where we all three competed. Luther won, and Ragnar was rather grumpy about it. Luther, in his wry way, said, "You're just upset that a Christian knight beat you at (Viking) axe throwing." But my dearest memory of Sir Luther was at the Caidan Hammer-in 1998. I had to do backflips to get the site, but what sold it to our Mundane Blacksmith hosts was that I could bring Master Atar Bakhtar to do a Damascus sword making demo. As it turned out, Atar had an injury that prevented him from showing up at the last minute. Luther skipped a Peerage meeting on that day, and stepped up and demonstrated hot-raising a German sallet helmet from a flat sheet of metal. This impressed our mundane hosts enough that they forgave our loss of Atar. I still owe Luther for that favor. ~Eadwynne of Runedun
