Memories

Originally this event was not meant to be a tournament. It started out as a potluck, but people feared that without fighting, no one would come out. The tourney was supposed to be “a no hats, no belts, nor titles-of-any-kind melee tourney with a peasant twist” The idea was that there WAS going to be a tourney, but it would be fought with cludgels, axes, pitchforks and other peasanty weapons. Well, that part didn’t really happen. Dreiburgen Summers are HOT. Many fighters showed up, but under the Dreiburgen sun, only one fighter armored up, Andrew Ian of Blackthorne. So I guess that means he won. But we did have peasant games and country dance classes (this kinda started a tradition of Dreiburgen Contradance and we had some great teachers and dancers in the Barony).

We had undercover royalty there. Adrian Buchanon showed up looking and acting like a caveman. I remember trying to herald out the order of the day when he stepped up, swiped my notebook and threw it to the ground, and then threw a copper dagger he'd just made to pin it to the ground. He said simply, "We're peasants, we don't need no stinkin' schedules." He was right, actually. I also recall that Armand de Sevigny in his peasant was there looking more comfortable and disreputable than I'd ever seen him before or since. At one point, he climbed up a tree with a bladder bag, and suggestively squirted a stream from it down on the folks below. We had peasant games and country dance classes (this kinda started a tradition of Dreiburgen Contradance and we had some great teachers and dancers in the Barony). Some folks went all out in their peasant personae. I remember in particular Morgana of the Shadowed Keep, a quite lovely and polite lady, who put her peasant costume outside and under her dogs for over a week to get it "just right." She did her best to look hideous, dragged her feet and flirted salaciously with the guys... who responded in proper horror. She definitely won as Beggar Queen, although I don't remember who won as Beggar King.
