On 17 March the Barony of Angels will be hosting a Prize tournament in the Canton of Gyldenholt. It will be held at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. This will be a fund raising event. All contests will require an entry donation and proceeds will go towards the Caid Publications Fund--which helps the Crown Prints.

Itinerary

  • 8:30 am-10:00 am Set Up
  • 10 am precisely Grand March
  • 10:30 am Court
  • 11:00 am to 12:00 Archery Contest
  • Sext (noon) Lunch
  • 12:30 pm Melees for fighters begin
  • 3:30 pm Arts Auction
  • 4:30 pm Closing Court

During the day there will be many contests for combatants and non-combatants. Some will be on-the-spot competitions (suggestions and sponsors of prizes are welcome to us!) Here are the contest ideas so far:

BREWING: Sponsored by Viscount Sir Christian of Orange. Three categories (beer or ale, wine and other). $200 entry donation - prizes TBA

ARCHERY: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

POETRY: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

BEST GOTHIC CHESS PIECE: Picture or rendering of a demon, gargoyle or troll. Pictures will be returned. Sponsored by James du Mer. Prize is a 5" brass cape pin. Fifty cents entry donation per entry.

HERALDIC DESIGN IN COSTUME: Best use in on-the-spot drawings. Sponsored by Baron John ap Griffin. Fifty cents entry donation per entry - prize TBA.

MOST MEDIEVAL OR RENAISSANCE LUNCH CARRIER: Which would include ice coolers, Coleman stoves and other food preparation items used at tourneys which look all too modern. Coverings, paint jobs or anything else may be used. Sponsored by Viscountess Lorissa du Griffin, prize TBA.

BEST COSTUME WORN AT THE PRIZE TOURNEY: to be considered as an entry, costume should be accessorized, with hat, hairdo, etc. Sponsor os Lord Lasarian of Twrynyswr. Prize and entry donation TBA.

FOOT RACES FOR YOUNG AND OLD: To be held at convenient intervals during the day. Sponsor: Lady Kathryn du Griffin. Prize and donation TBA.

NEEDLEWORK: Anything done with a needle (or two) may be entered; categories will be formed onsite. Sponsor is Baroness Bjo of Griffin. Prizes: the book A Pageant of Patterns for Needlepoint Canvas, Thai "silver" sewing box accessories, winner's choice of antique lace. Entry donation is fifty cents per entry.

MINIATURE ILLUSTRATION CONTEST: Two categories (Xerox or other copy of a medieval art piece colored by entrant, and original work). All entries must be less than 5"x7" in size. Sponsor: Baroness Bjo of Griffin. Entry donation is 25 cents per piece; prize TBA.

BEST ILLUMINATED "G" FOR GYLDENHOLT: Sponsor, details and entry donation TBA.

BEST AXE & KNIFE-THROWING CONTEST: The prize will be given for accuracy from a starting point of thirty feet. Prize: A throwing knife to the winner in each area. Sponsor: Chenan of Grey Oaks. there will be a $1 entry donation for each category.

DESIGN OF MEDIEVAL SHIP: Must be authentic, original and usable. Must be drawing or blueprints. Prize and donation fee TBA. Sponsor Edmund of the Oaks

CHESS AND BACKGAMMON TOURNAMENTS: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

INDIAN HAND WRESTLING: Sponsored by Chenan of Grey Oaks. The prize will be a leather scabbard for a knife. There will be a fifty-cent donation.

BEST SONG ABOUT AN SCA PERSON OR EVENT: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

BEST IRISH JIG: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

BEST CHALLENGE WITH A GLOVE: You cannot actually hit your opponent with the glove. Sponsor: Jeane La Rue Du Cheval. Gloves furnished. Prize and entry donation TBA.

BEST DETAILED SCALE DRAWING OF A CATAPULT: Actually will be made into a real one. Must be an onager, 5 feet by 7 feet outside diameter. Sponsors: Viscount Sir Christian of Orange and James du Mer. There will be a $2 entry donation. Prize to be announced.

BEST USE OF NATURAL GREEN IN MEDIEVAL DISH: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

BEST PERIOD READING: Sponsor, details & entry donation TBA. (Volunteers??)

MELEES: There will be divers melees with different prizes. Most will have a $1 entry donation:

  • Best Death: Sponsor, details and entry donation TBA
  • Axe or Mace Melee: Sponsored by Chenan of Grey Oaks. Prize will be a sword. There will be a $2 entry donation.
  • Many other melees will be announced.

Other fundraising activities will be carried on throughout the day, including:

  • A Pie Auction. You bid on a pie to decorate your favorite (agreeable) person with.
  • A Bake Sale
  • Arts Auction. Contributions would be greatly appreciated - please contact the Autocrat
  • Fighters Auction. A fighter may be auctioned off if he prefers to donate himself to the auction. there will be double prizes - one for the fighter and one for the bidder.

Anyone having any ideas for fundraising activities or who is willing to sponsor and provide a prize or a contest not already listed, contact the Autocrat. Also, anyone interested in making goodies for the Bake Sale please notify the Autocrat.

NOTE: Among the other prizes, there will be awarded gemstones (faceted green sapphires and faced red garnets, from Thailand), and assorted trims, brain and lace. These are kindly donated by Baroness Bjo of Griffin.
