Memories

Although Tomüki granted me my accolade as a Court Baron, that is not what I most remember him for. When my middle son, Nikolaus Grünenwaldt, was still a small boy (a LONG time ago), Tomüki took time to give him some martial pointers. It was a kindness and respect that I will always remember him for. But the story continues. About a decade later, Tomüki was teaching a great sword seminar and my son (who was no longer a small boy, and well over six foot tall) wanted to learn from him. So off we went. I never expected Tomüki to remember Nick - it had been so long, and Nick was so changed. But he did! And he showed my son the same patience, kindness and respect that he did that long decade earlier. This is how I will always remember him. Just a bit of an addition to the story, Nick learned how to use a great sword by my hand and I learned from Sir Nicholas duKane. When Nick was learning under Tomüki, Nick said, "Tomüki is teaching a whole different way to use a great sword than you taught me." I laughed, and replied, "He's a duke, I'm not. Listen to what he tells you." He did and not only combined both styles, but added to them. He got good enough that another duke asked Nick to help train him. One thing I have always loved about the SCA is the willingness of its members to freely share what they know. This is a great legacy. Thank you, Tomüki. ~ Eadwynne
