Sibylla de Haze (pron: de Hah-zeh) currently resides in the land between the Barony of Altavia and the Shire of Darach, and is an active participant within Altavia. She joined the SCA in 2014 after a lifelong obsession with historic costuming.

She maintains the costuming blog Crinolines & Cavaliers

Persona

Sibylla de Haze (pron. Hah-zeh) was born in 1515, in the city of Bruges. Lady de Haze was born into a wealthy merchant family that was unified in marriage to strengthen alliances between families of Venice and Bruges/Antwerp. Her father, Jacob de Haze— a cloth merchant, had moved to Antwerp after struggling with his business in Bruges when the Zwin channel had begun to significantly silt up.

After the family had moved their silk and pigment trade to Antwerp, Jacob had opened a printing press. As a youth, she recalled her grandfather reminiscing with how he had once helped finance the press for William Caxton, who would later become wildly successful in London after becoming one of the first English retailers of printed books. Sibylla’s mother, Fiametta de Haze (née Grimani) had made certain of her robust education as a youth, and instructed her in not only reading and writing (in hopes of helping to carry along the family trade) but also in that of painting, poetry, and music.

After the reformation took off in Northwestern Europe, Jacob— much to Fiametta’s displeasure, got swept up in the maelstrom of revolt. He began using his printing press to print protestant propaganda, and was eventually arrested in 1530 in Florence for importing anti-papist pamphlet books to a nobleman who happened to be an agent of the pope. Her father now imprisoned, and consequently her family now ruined, her mother had no choice but to return to Venice in shame. Having no reasonable marriage prospect for a family that was embroiled in scandal, Sibylla had used what was remaining of her family connections to enter into a tutelage with a well-known painter. However, her position as a young woman from a scandalized family could only get her so far as an artist. Always headstrong, she shirked the much-undesired alternative of returning to Antwerp to save the family through an ill-matched offer of marriage. She had other plans. Frustrated with life’s barriers— as well as driven by her insatiable pursuit of knowledge, the arts, and a desire to avenge her family— she had found herself being led down to another path— that of the Cortegiana Onesta…

  • Mundanely, Sibylla enjoys historical costume studies, and enjoys making (and wearing) garb from all eras. She is especially fond of the 16th through 17th centuries.
