The Legend

They say his first ever SCA event was in Calafia, way back in 1997 Before the invention of Giant miniature space Unicorns. He was invited to a fencing practice at the most holy site of Allied Gardens Park by Saint Baybars. And Ian did say, "I went with a couple other friends and ended up having a really great time." As it turned out he was pretty good at it and was excited to see and do more! Thus he embarked on his first pilgrimage in that September, to a place called ‘Potrero War’. Unfortunately for Potrero, he couldn’t fight in that war (he wasn’t authorized), but he was smitten after watching all the melees and tournaments! Finally! He was empowered with authorization and fought for the first time at the May Potrero War in 1998.

"I thought it was only fitting that my last SCA event in Caid before assentation should be at the place of my first. Allied Garden Park in Calafia. I will be running a tournament to celebrate this sport, the people, and the talent that makes up this amazing community. I will also be trying to attend either an event or a practice in as many baronies as I can before the 21st of August, just so I can make sure I get to spend time with as many of my friends as possible. I will be posting a schedule of those practices and events later in case anyone who can’t make it to the tournament on the 21st wants to come by and say goodbye."

The Tournament

Hark, sayeth the Ian:

As for the tournament, its called, “The Freakin’ Tournament” for a reason. The winner…. Gets to add Freakin’ to their name!! Just imagine, you are stepping onto the field, and you hear, “Oh crap! Look, its Freakin' (YOUR NAME HERE)!!” How awesome is that? Very awesome. Its very very awesome. I know. I’ve been Freakin’ for years now. There will be various other prizes as well for assorted categories. As for the tournament itself… well…

Those that know me should be able to guess that this will be a very deadly tournament. Double kills are death. Bye is destructive. Any wounds you receive in one round will carry over to the next round, but not the one after that. A death resets all wounds… obviously. Duh. (For example, you win but lose a hand in round one. So you start round two without that hand. Lets say you win that round as well, but loose your legs. Well, in round three you have the hand back, but are now down your legs. You continue to beat the odds and win THAT round as well without losing any body parts. Well done! Now you will start round four without any wounds at all! You are amazing!).

The reason for the retained wounds is that while I do strive to beat my opponents, I always feel that I have failed if I end up trading or being wounded in the fight. It’s the art of DEFENSE after all. I think it adds weight to your decisions during the fight if you know that the wounds you take will affect you in your next fight.

All that being said, it will be a triple elimination tournament, so you should all get enough fighting in. I will be starting a side area after the third round to fight anyone that wants to play with me. I will ALSO be challenging the winner of the tournament to a best two out of three, and if they beat me they will also get an extra very special prize, above and beyond now being known as Freakin’ (YOUR NAME HERE).

It would be neat for “The Freakin’ Tournament” to end up being a yearly event, people fighting for the title. But that’s not really here nor there, just think it would be fun 😊
