An Open Letter to the Kingdom of Caid from the Shire of Burning Sands in the Kingdom of Atenveldt (From the Crown Prints, January, 1989). Challenge accepted at Estrella XII, 1996.

Greetings! For many seasons now we have been ranging in untenanted land to our West. We are a poor shire and far from the common commerce centers. To eke out our subsistence, we have foraged, unwittingly at first, into your Kingdom. These regions, mundanely known as Winterhaven and Blythe, have yielded bounty to us and we find these lands fair. As we have met with no resistance, we have claimed them for our own.

However, we have received word from our gracious and most noble Royal Majesty, King Trelon, that his archivists, through laborious searching of dusty records, have discovered that these are indeed Crown Lands of Caid, (Barony of Dreiburgen). We, the loyal inhabitants of the shire of Burning Sands and the Kingdom of Atenveldt find this waste of ;useful lands sad and feel duty-bound to (raid) utilize them for the betterment of the shire and the glory of Atenveldt. The Kingdom of Caid has so much wealth in its own keep0s that it surely cannot begrudge a poor shire a few abandoned sites deemed unworthy in the eyes of so large a kingdom.

Se we say unto you that should you hold dear these lands then meet us on the field of honor and be prepared to handsomely ransom those lands you have been so carelss with. For our shire claim is as strong as the land that has bred us and we will not meekly give back that which we have husbanded and grown to cherish! We extend this challenge to all of Caid who would attempt to keep Caid as she was. We will dispatch a messenger forthwith when a suitable site across the river has been selected and the time is right;. Prepare now, Caid, for you will need much to ransom these lands back and have not a moment to lose!

Memories

The challenge to Caid from the Shire of the Burning Sands came in 1989, and took about five years to answer. In 1996, Dreiburgen Baron and Baroness, Thurstan and Allaine, were responsible for the lands in question since Blythe, CA, was part of the Barony of Dreiburgen. From what Baron Thurstan told me, he did not feel that Dreiburgen could support the area as well as the Shire of Burning Sands could, and so he was willing to give it up... but not without a fight. This fight happened during Estrella War XII, 1996, with the approval of Caid's King John II. Dreiburgen fought valiantly and virtually alone against the onslaught of the Army of the Kingdom of Atenveldt.
