Lord Séamus mac Néill Uí Chonchobhair has been an active member of the SCA since 2015, but has been playing on and off since his first event, Fall Crown in the Kingdom of the West in 1992. Since coming back to the SCA full time in 2015, he's grown into various roles around the Baronies of first Wintermist, and now Lyondemere, including Baronial Herald and Webwright, as well as being deputy in both positions and for Arts & Science. He's been an authorized rapier fighter since GWW 2018, and is slowly learning Cut & Thrust as well. Over the pandemic, he supported the Barony of Wintermist by doing remote consultations for heraldry, and operating the monthly Zoom calls for the Baronial Council Meetings. Mostly, though, he just loves helping people around him to have fun, because that's what we're really all here for.

Persona

  • Séamus is an indiscriminate Irishman of no particular time. He once claimed to be 14th century, but he fights rapier which is 16th century, plays the Saxon Lyre which is 9th century, and designs heraldry based on 4 centuries of historical practice. He's clearly confused.
  • He drinks, and he knows nothing.

Interests and SCA-related hobbies

  • Brewing: mead, beer, wine, cordials, and now vinegar. Although the vinegar was not on purpose.
  • Historical fencing, also known as heavy rapier. Mostly losing spectacularly. Also learning Cut & Thrust now, which mostly means buying more swords to lose with.
  • Bardic arts: singing, drumming, guitar, scheitholt, Anglo-Saxon lyre. Knows a lot of 20th century power ballads. Better at collecting instruments than playing them.
  • Period board games: Goose, Nine Mens Morris, Senet. Loses to his youngest child on a regular basis.
  • Target archery, although he never actually practices.
  • Fiber arts: knitting and kumihimo. Pretends to be interested in tablet weaving but let's be real, he doesn't have the time.
  • Pewter casting. Took a class, bought the equipment, but has been too terrified to commit to carving his soapstone blanks.
  • Pretending to learn new things, or more accurately, falling down rabbit holes on YouTube when he should be at work. Like right now. He should be working and not editing his Wiki page.

In Case of Court

  • In general, I'm up for anything. I like surprises, I like planned theatricality, whatever works. I don't mind being caught off guard, but if someone wants to do a complicated plan, I'm happy to participate too.
  • If for some reason I'm getting called up for something complicated or that's a genuinely big deal, just make it fun. That's all I care about. Fun for the crowd particularly. I want people to laugh and be happy. I'm all about shtick, feel free to surprise me, embarrass me, whatever.
  • And if anyone decides to make a custom scroll for any reason, I LOVE marginalia. The weirder the better. Even the dirty stuff. I'm absolutely obsessed with the visual/art style of the Book of Kells.
