The Tortoise Challenge competition is held at Dreiburgen Anniversary each year. It was created in 2018 by Dreiburgen's Arts and Sciences Officer Agnes Wurtman.

2019 (A.S. LIV) marks the second year of the Tortoise Challenge, a competition that celebrates improvement in newly learned arts and science disciplines. Named after Aesop's fable of the Tortoise and the Hare, this takes place in two parts.

1. The Hare Competition: entrants submit their first effort in a topic they began learning within three months before the event. 2. The Tortoise Competition: last year's Hare entrants submit their best work in the same art or craft. Winning honors go to the most improved artisan.

Entries may be in any discipline that fits onto a display table. Documentation is welcomed but not required. The event organizers will provide a basic table covering for display.

The Hare competition is open to all SCAdians from newcomer to laurel. Laurels, please enter in a discipline unrelated to your specialty (a laurel in blacksmithing might enter their first effort at embroidery). Hare entrants must begin learning their craft on or after July 31, 2019 and compete with their first work.

The Tortoise competition is limited to people who competed for Hare honors at Dreiburgen Anniversary 2018. A photo gallery of last year's entries will be available to accompany the Tortoise competition so that voters can evaluate progress in each entrant's skills.

Winner selection is by people's choice; if a tie occurs the Baron and Baroness of Dreiburgen will select the winning entry.

Event Information

The event is run in two parts:

  • The first year people are encouraged to submit their attempts at a craft they are just starting, asking for feedback.
  • Those who participate in that stage of the challenge will be eligible to participate in round 2 the next year, where they will be judged on their improvement of the same craft.

The Challenge is judged by people's choice.
