A weekend of Scribe's Studies, sponsored by the Collegium Caidis, will be held 22-23 March XIV. Saturday's classes will concentrate on calligraphy, though not exclusively, and Sunday's on illumination. Classes definitely scheduled include:

  • Quill and Reed Pen Cutting
  • Layout of a Scroll
  • Tools of the Modern Graphic Artist
  • Color
  • History of Letterforms
  • History and Evolution of Illumination Styles, as well as talks on divers styles of illumination

There will be more classes of interest to the established scribe and eager new folk. Class list of forms in center of this issues of the CP. There will also be a display of scrolls.

This workshop is open to anyone interested in any phase of calligraphy & illumination; student is free to sign up for just one class selection if nothing else is of interest.

Student will leave this Calligraphy & Illumination Collegium with a color wheel, quill pens, a scroll template & a great deal of information to make SCA scroll-making more enjoyable.

UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED, MATERIALS & SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR CLASSES WILL BE SUPPLIED BY INSTRUCTOR.

A minimum of supplies will be on hand for sale; students are urged to bring standard artist's toolbox (if already on hand) or play to supply their own materials from list:

NEEDED MATERIALS

  • Note-taking materials (pen or pencil, notepad)
  • Speedball holder with C-3 or C-4 nib, or Osmiroid pen with B-2 point (or reasonable substitute)
  • Straight-edge ruler
  • Pencil: HB
  • Eraser

OPTIONAL BUT HELPFUL

  • Sack lunch
  • Lined paper or grid paper (1/5 or 1/10)
  • X-acto knife or scalpel or sharp knife
  • Compass

Sat. March 22 Throughout the day: field trips to McManus & Morgan!

This fabulous shop specializing in calligraphic supplies & very large paper source is too small to accommodate more than one car-load of Collegium students at a time. Sign-up for car-pooling will continue through the day for anyone who wishes to see the warehouse collection of beautiful papers & possibly obtain calligraphic supplies not easily found in student's own neighborhood.

  • 9am-11am: Basic Heraldry for Scribes. Required class for anyone interested in making SCA scrolls. Instructors: Louise of Woodsholme & John ap Griffin
  • 11am-1pm: History of the Letter & History of Illumination. Instructor: Fenton North Mark
  • 2pm-4pm:
  • 4pm-6pm: Calligraphic Tools & Materials, Cutting Quill Pens. Instructors: Rena Wills & Éowyn Amberdrake
  • 7:30-10pm: Scroll Display & Modified Revel

Sun. March 23

The Children of the Silver Crescent (Caidan Crescents) will once again offer special classes scaled to younger interests & attention-spans. Children signed up for a day's classes will be charged $2.00 per day per child (under 14) if they can take classes supplied by Lady Mairi-Kathleen nic Lauren Children of the Silver Crescent scheduling. Any child (of any age) taking an adult class will be charged accordingly; they are welcome to do so if they behave (actually, adults have to behave, also!) Children of the Silver Crescent classes are NOT baby-sitting sessions, but a learning experience.

FOOD: A listing of restaurants in the area will be available at Registration. Coffee & tea will be available; sack lunches may be stored in the refrigerator on school site. As always, students are urged to bring lunches & work thru lunchtime to learn even more from willing instructors.

Future workshop sessions will include ink-making, gilding, making wax tables & specialized illumination topics (Celtic, Persian, Viking, etc.) If interested in any of these or other calligraphic subjects, please let Mistress Eowyn Amberdrake know; if interested in teaching, speak up!
