"Field herald" is a generic job title. At tournaments, the field herald calls combattants to their assigned field, announces the names of the combattants for each bout, leads the ceremony of salutes, and announces the victor at the end.

Anyone can try their hand at field heralding by simply volunteering with the field herald coordinator (often the local herald or the Bellows herald at kingdom tournaments) following opening court. The coordinator should be able to supply volunteers with a script to follow and advice and support, as needed.

Ceremony of Salutes

Before tournament combat begins, a field herald directs the combatants to honor the Crown, their Consort, and their Opponent. In its simplest form, these directions consist of "Gentlemen, honor the Crown! Honor your Consort! Honor your opponent!" Field heralds should be prepared to adjust this text as necessary; one or both of the combatants may be a Lady, and not all fighters have consorts.
