Thegn Domhnall mac Pharlain has been an active member of the Circle of Bards of Caid since joining the SCA in the late 1990s. As Bard Elder and Founding Member of the Cliar Cu Buidhe household, he is the leader of the Cliar Cu Buidhe troupe. He has also been an active member of The Right Noble Guild of Saint Genesius, and the Commedia dell'Arte troupe, I Sciocci!.

In addition to his musical interests, Domhnall is a skilled archer and woodworker. He enjoys metalworking, calligraphy and illumination, and period cookery, especially on the Viking brazier he designed and built for the household camp. The Cliar Cu Buidhe encampment is a great source of pride for Domhnall. He continually endeavors towards building an impressive period camp, using his many woodworking skills and knowledge of period cooking methods. He is also a member of The Right Noble Upper Crust Cooking Guild.

Persona

Domhnall was born in the feudal barony of Arrochar, in the Scottish Highlands, in the late 13th century. He grew up on these same ancestral lands, located at the heads of Loch Long and Loch Lomond, with his clansmen, considered by many to be quite a turbulent lot. They are so competent at raiding the neighbor's cattle herds at night, that the full moon is often referred to as "Macfarlane's Lantern". Domhnall proudly displays this aspect of his history on his Arms.

Like many of his neighbors, Domhnall made a rare trip out of the Highlands to fight alongside Robert the Bruce, in the War for Scottish Independence from the English King Edward Plantagenet. Following a victory at Bannock Burn in 1314, Domhnall, still a young man, returned briefly to his beloved homeland. It was at this time that he met and married Beathog nic Dhonnchaidh, a daughter of the Donnchaidh Clan Chief, himself also a Bruce supporter. Soon after, Domhnall was called into service again, and the couple eventually accompanied King Robert I to Lochleven Castle, in 1323. A then Scottish stronghold, the castle had been strategically situated in the middle of Loch Leven by the English, between the royal burghs of Perth, Stirling and Edinburgh, but was captured by the Scots in the latter part of the 13th century, by the forces of William Wallace.

They remained in residence on the island for several years and then traveled rather extensively in later years. Their travels eventually led them to the lands of the Kingdom of Caid, where they continue to reside among friends. They are both well known within the kingdom for their bardic and performance arts. They visit their homeland and the lands surrounding Loch Lomond, whenever possible.

Musical Performance

The troupe Cliar Cu Buidhe was founded in 2003, the result of a dream Domhnall shared with Beathog nic Dhonnchaidh, to share the music and stories, of and about the SCA period, in a unique, entertaining way. Over the years, the troupe has performed in many venues: for Coronations, Baronial Investitures and Anniversary Celebrations, Royal Lunches, Queens Teas, and too many wars and tourneys to list. Cliar Cu Buidhe has recorded over 80 songs, all of which were either written in period or maintain a medieval flavor through subject, lyric and performance style. All music performed by the Cliar Cu Buidhe troupe was either written, or arranged, by Bard Elder Domhnall and partner Beathog nic Dhonnchaidh.

Membership in the troupe is restricted to members of the household of the same name, Cliar Cu Buidhe. Although a few personnel changes have been made over the years, the troupe has been able to maintain it's popularity, and has performed regularly throughout the Kingdoms of Caid and Atenveldt. Recently, troupe members have scattered over several kingdoms, so it is not possible for the troupe to appear in its entirety. Fortunately, for fans of the troupe, Cliar Cu Buidhe recorded five CDs, which remain available, and have begun work on a sixth.

Members of the troupe Cliar Cu Buidhe are:
