Don Angus le Todde Mac Donnell, or just "Todde".

Persona

Todde mac Donnell is a private agent of the Earl of Cassilis at the markets of Bruges in the late 1560’s. His primary duties are selling the wool from his excellency’s flocks at a good price, and seeing the wealth returned on a ship loaded with profitable goods and whatever luxuries the Earl desires. As this work puts ten thousand marks in his hands for a few short weeks, Todde spends the prior months arranging profitable orders and sales. If he can string together a few prudent trades while dodging religious riots and overzealous Spanish magistrates, the profits will fund the Calix Inundans Company’s growing ventures all year.

Todde spends the rest of the year attending to his lovely Venetian wife Mora, dabbling in leatherwork, practicing his rapier, and traveling fairly regularly to Spain and Caid to investigate business opportunities. Calix Inundans keeps its Mediterranean warehouse in Cadiz, down the street from the Inn of the Crimson Spade, the better to um, provide the Earl with his luxuries.

Rapier Teaching Dossier

Summary:

Teaching Strengths:

  • 1-on-1 diagnosis and coaching for intermediate fencers
  • Tailoring one's fight to the opponent
  • Rogue & skirmish tactics
  • Medium-size groups of beginners and novices
  • Buckler specialist
  • A lot of experience with younger and lady fencers

Teaching Weaknesses:

  • Limited knowledge of intermediate and advanced Italian rapier
  • Not so good at coaching strength-based fencers or infighting

Availability:

  • Teach at Isles practice weekly, can be persuaded to go to Darach to teach
  • Happy to teach at events, but attending fewer while we have a young son

Detailed Questionnaire:

Q: Are you more comfortable with beginners, advanced...etc?

A: Very comfortable teaching groups of beginners. For intermediate & advanced fighters I do better teaching 1-on-1.

Q: Are you willing to take students, are you a tourney teacher or a melee teacher?

A: Willing to take students, but my travel is limited with a new born son. I am happy to teach tourney fighting or skirmish/rogue melee tactics. I am a terrible line fighter, but can run the drills. My main tourney style is to probe the opponent and adapt my fight to win safely; I find this is difficult to teach, but would like to try.

Q: Do you prefer foot work over speed?

A: A bit of each, but I stick to fairly simple footwork. My emphasis is on understanding the fight and adapting.

Q: Are you aggressive in teaching, do you like to watch and critique or fight and critique?

A: I'm a fairly exuberant teacher, and some might call that aggressive. I find it hard to diagnose subtle problems without actually fencing with the student.

Q: Are you uncomfortable teaching females, lefties, tall people, short people, large people, slow people...what do you prefer and who can you offer the most too?

A: I am weakest at teaching intermediate/advanced Italian fencing, because I can only barely do it myself. I also have trouble teaching fighters who use a lot of strength. Otherwise, I think I'm a fairly versatile teacher who tries to teach too many different things.

Q: Do you travel to other practices?

A: I can be persuaded to come to Darach practice, but my mobility is limited by a young son.

Q: Are you approachable, will you make them cry?

A: Apparently not. I have taught a lot of young ladies in Isles, and the only two I haven't been able to teach had orthopedic problems that prevented normal fencing

Q: Are you willing to commit so much time, how far are you willing to travel, how active are you...

A: I'm happy to teach at events, but Isles has a lot of newbies, so getting 1-on-1 time with me is harder than I would like.
